Oracy – Voice 21

At St. Mary’s, we strive to create an oracy-rich community, where we ensure that all children feel that their voices are valued and listened to. The children are taught to use their voice confidently to: reason, negotiate, present and explore ideas to support their learning across the curriculum and to prepare them for later life.

When the children returned to school after half term, we participated in an oracy day. This consisted of a range of activities in which the children could develop their oral and aural skills.

Watch below to see some of the activities we participated in.

Brilliant

You are amazing!

During today’s Reading lesson, Year 5 were put into groups and had to re-enact a scene from ‘The Wind in the Willows’. The scene in question saw Mr Toad in court for three very serious crimes: stealing a valuable sports car, driving extremely dangerously and the most serious of all being (as the judge announced) calling the arresting policeman a nincompoop! The children acted the scene out beautifully and really brought the story to life through the physical strand of oracy!

During today’s RE lesson, Year 5 worked together to present an educational Newsround segment based on The Sacrament of the Sick. The children eloquently explained what the sacrament was and described the different actions and words that are used by the priest during the sacrament. The children were also tasked with including the role of the church in caring for the sick in their presentations.

During today’s History lesson, Year 5 have been learning about different Greek philosophers and scholars. After learning about them, the children took part in discussions about which philosopher or scholar has made the most impact in today’s modern world. We used our ‘Talk Tactics’ such as instigate, challenge and build to take part in a fierce debate! #historystm #oracystm #year5stm See MoreSee Less
