Headteacher

At St Mary’s, we cater for children from the age of 3-11, Catholic and Non-Catholic. The vast majority of our children move on to St John Fisher Catholic Collegiate, the secondary school within our Multi Academy Company (family of schools). We work closely with them to ease the transition from primary to secondary education for our learners.

We are very proud of the strong support which we receive from our parish priest, Canon Paul, and assistant priest Fr John. All staff and children are very well supported in deepening their understanding of the gospel values, which lie at the heart of everything we do and is included in our school mission statement, ‘Learning to Live Out Our Calling with Compassion and Love.’ Our children are expected to live out their faith and are well equipped to do so as our Catholic Values permeate throughout the life of our school.

As an inclusive school, we have high expectations of all children. We instill our pupils with a sense of personal and collective responsibility and we place a great emphasis on the personal, social, spiritual and health education of our pupils. Our children experience a carefully designed, broad and balanced curriculum and we have ensured that our school has the facilities and resources to provide our children with opportunities to discover their talents and interests. We have a strong tradition in music and sports and we take great delight in developing our children’s achievements in these areas.

Our teaching staff view their work as a vocation and actively seek to motivate and inspire our children to hold a life long love of learning. Our school works to enable everyone to become a responsible, happy and compassionate citizen in order to prepare them for the opportunities and responsibilities in our rapidly changing society. We believe that to achieve this for our children, it is crucial for parents, carers and the school to work together in partnership. There are many opportunities throughout the school year to develop this relationship. We have a committed pastoral team who are knowledgeable and resourceful in providing support for all families within school and beyond the school gates. We look forward to continuing to work with you to achieve your child’s full potential. If you have not yet visited our school and would like to come and meet us, please contact the school office to arrange a visit.
We look forward to welcoming you to our school!

✝️ Lent 2026 ✝️

Today we begin the holy season of Lent with Ash Wednesday.

Lent is a sacred time when the Church invites us to return our hearts to God through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is a season to pause, reflect and renew our faith so that we can grow closer to Christ and live more fully as His disciples.

In his Lent message for 2026, Pope Leo reminds us that Lent is when the Church “invites us to place the mystery of God back in the centre of our lives in order to find renewal in our faith and keep our hearts from being consumed by the anxieties and distractions of daily life.” He encourages us to listen deeply — to God’s word to one another and to the needs of the world around us — because “the willingness to listen is the first way we demonstrate our desire to enter into relationship.”

The Holy Father also reminds us that fasting is not only about food but about our hearts and actions. He invites us to take up a special challenge this Lent: to fast from hurtful words. He writes “Let us begin by disarming our language avoiding harsh words and rash judgment… Instead let us strive to measure our words and cultivate kindness and respect.” In this way our words can become words of hope, peace and love.

As a school family we begin this Lenten journey together asking God to help us grow in kindness generosity and compassion especially towards those most in need. May this be a season where we listen more love more and become more like Jesus.

🙏 Prayer for Ash Wednesday 🙏

Loving God
As we receive ashes today,
help us remember that we belong to you.
Guide us through this season of Lent
so that through prayer we grow closer to you.
Through fasting we grow in self control
and through giving we grow in love for others.
Teach us to listen with gentle hearts,
to speak with kind words
and to care for those who need us most.
May this Lent change us
so that we may help change the world.
Amen.

Wishing all our families a peaceful and prayerful start to Lent ✝️

With our second Catholic Life Pledge falling so close to Valentine’s Day, Year 4 decided to share the love ❤️ Linking to our school motto, Year 4 created cards filled with thoughtful prayers, kind words and colourful designs to brighten someone’s day.

They used scripture (John 13:34–35) “Love one another as I have loved you,” to spread messages of love and kindness to the residents of Belong Newcastle-under-Lyme incorporating the Belong Heritage Gallery. The children behaved impeccably and showed such compassion and respect throughout the visit. It was wonderful to see the smiling faces of the residents as they read their cards and chatted with the children.

A truly heartwarming way to live out our faith in action and share God’s love with others. #restm #catholiclifestm #catholiclifepledge

🎨🎨Our creative Year 5 children have been diving into the world of installation art in Art & Design!

They have been exploring how artists use space, scale and materials to create powerful installation pieces that convey ideas, transform spaces and shape the viewer’s experience. The children were fascinated to learn how art doesn’t just hang on a wall – it can completely change how we see and feel within a space.

As part of their learning, they studied the work of Cai Guo-Qiang, exploring how he uses unusual materials and dramatic scale to create impactful installations.

Inspired by his work, the children worked collaboratively in groups to design and create their own imaginative art installations.

The children finished the unit by creating an Oracy performance evaluating their work. 🎨🎨

Yesterday, our fantastic Year 3s completed their Music unit, “Developing Singing Technique”, and what a journey it has been!

Throughout the unit, the children have been working hard to sing in time with others, developing their confidence and teamwork skills. They have also needed to recognise and use simple rhythmic notation to help them compose and perform their very own Viking song!

We are so proud of how they’ve grown as performers – showing great focus, enthusiasm and creativity. 🛡️🎵

Please take a moment to enjoy their wonderful singing and celebrate their achievements with us! 👏🎥

It was also lovely to see so many parents there to watch their children perform. Thank you for your continued support.

Music

“Music is taught very effectively as pupils learn to play instruments and sing to a good standard. Music and singing play a large part in the school’s life. Pupils participate enthusiastically in making music and singing in special events at the school and in the local community. Pupils sing in tune and in harmony using three parts with good tonal quality.” – OFSTED

Sports

Achieving the gold mark for Physical Education since 2018!
“The primary physical education and sport premium is spent very well. Pupils have benefited from access to a wide variety of after-school clubs, competitive events and special activities. As a result, increasingly more pupils participate in a wider range of sports” – OFSTED
