The Society of St Vincent de Paul has been engaging with young people and education since its earliest days. Today the SVP England & Wales is pleased to highlight its continuing strong links with young people, through the development of its new ‘Mini Vinnies’ programme – a ground-breaking Primary Schools initiative which is seen as having, “the potential to significantly contribute to the future of our Society.”
‘Mini Vinnies’ are children aged between 7 to 11 (or younger) who, with the permission of their parents and the support of their Schools, are encouraged to embark on their first steps as possible ‘Vincentians for life’. At St. Mary’s, we have children from Year 2 – Year 6 as representatives for our school. These representatives work to guide the school in looking after members within our school community, fundraising for those less fortunate and in reaching out to the wider community. Whilst the organisation is overseen by Mrs Wrigley, it is led by the children. As Mini Vinnies, the youngsters are guided in their formative steps – helping and enabling them to become in every sense, young Vincentians – or ‘Mini Vinnies’
Harvest Donations
This harvest time we wanted to put our faith into action by thinking of those who do not have enough food to eat. We collected donations to give to the local food banks. We made posters and displayed them around the school to encourage people to donate. We then donated these to St Luke’s food bank.
Ukrainian Hearts
Today we have created love hearts to send to lift the spirits of the Ukrainian people.
Easter Baskets for Rowan Court
This half term we have been thinking about the effects of loneliness. We spoke about the residents of care homes who were unable to have any visitors during the pandemic so we decided to make Easter baskets for the residents of Rowan Court. We went across to deliver the baskets and they were delighted to see us!
