What Ofsted said about maths at St. Mary’s:
‘The teaching of Mathematics across the school in particularly effective. Teachers use a range of resources to provide pupils with explicit models to support their learning. Because of this, pupils can relate and apply what they have learned in a variety of contexts. This deepens pupils’ understanding.’

UKMT Junior Maths Challenge 2025
We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils, who recently took part in the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Maths Challenge – a national competition typically aimed at pupils up to Year 9.
The questions were exceptionally challenging to and it is very unusual for children of their age to place in the competition. To have taken part, and performed so well, is a remarkable achievement.
This year, we are proud to announce that the children have been awarded a record number of certificates.
Congratulations to Urszula, Milosz, Akshayan, Alexia, Ramona and Faizah who achieved Bronze. Oliver, Cameron and Milan who achieved silver
and Miné who amazingly received ‘best in school’ and a gold award!

Well done to all involved – your hard work, perseverance and mathematical thinking have truly paid off.

BBC Radio Stoke

Year 6 children took part in recording for BBC Radio Stoke’s ‘No Fuss Eleven Plus’ challenge. They had to test the public on their mathematical knowledge and see how well they would get on, if faced with the SATs questions that the children have to answer. We enjoyed meeting the presenters and having a tour of the station afterwards. Listen out for us on the radio!
Year 4 have been using a host of concrete resources for their maths learning today. Focusing on 1s, 10s, 100s and 1000s, they used place value grids, base 10 equipment and stem sentences to explain their reasoning, when answering questions, and used their Oracy skills to build and challenge. #mathsstm #year4stm #oracystm … See MoreSee Less

⭐️ A huge thank you to all the parents who were able to join us today for our Multiplication Check Workshop in Year 4. It was wonderful to see such fantastic support for our learners!
During the session, we shared how we’ll be supporting the children in the lead-up to the Multiplication Check, ways parents can track their child’s progress and additional resources to help boost learning at home. We truly value the partnership between home and school and your involvement makes a real difference.
Thanks again for your continued support! 🙏🏼

Today our Year 2 children explored place value using practical equipment. They worked with tens and ones on a place value grid, building numbers and seeing how digits represent their value.
The children loved moving the equipment around, grouping tens and ones and spotting patterns in numbers. #year2stm #mathsstm … See MoreSee Less

Maths mates to the ready! Today in Maths, our Year 1 children have enjoyed using the equipment in their Maths packs to help them to represent numbers to ten. In pairs, they used cubes, a number fan and a tens frame to accurately represent a number to ten. We also used a stem sentences to help us to understand what a ten frame is. The children worked really well together and showed a growing confidence in representing numbers to ten using the equipment.

Today in Maths, Year 4 were introduced to 4-digit numbers! They started by using a place value grid to explore and represent a variety of numbers, really getting to grips with thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. The excitement grew as they took to the interactive whiteboard, where they were challenged by their classmates to represent different 4-digit numbers. #year4stm #mathsstm … See MoreSee Less

✨ In Year 6 maths this week, the children have been exploring the composition of numbers. Using their place value grids, they’ve investigated what happens when numbers increase and decrease. The practical equipment has really helped them understand the value of numbers – fantastic work, Year 6! 👏🔢

Today in maths, Year 3 were introduced to hundreds numbers for the first time! The children used place value grids and base 10 equipment to explore how many hundreds, tens and ones are in a number. We also used a stem sentence to help us explain our thinking clearly. The children worked brilliantly and are beginning to grow in confidence with larger numbers. #mathsstm #year3stm … See MoreSee Less
