🌑 Year 5 & 6 Take Part in Black Out Day! 🌑
Today, our Year 5 and 6 students took part in Black Out Day, a special event where they put all technology aside – no iPads, no interactive boards and no digital devices of any kind! The purpose of the day was to give our children a chance to experience learning and creativity without relying on screens, encouraging collaboration, imagination, and hands-on problem solving.
It was wonderful to see the children engaging in activities, working together, and having fun in new ways. By the end of the day, many of the students said that they hadn’t missed the technology at all and had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
A big well done to all our Year 5 and 6 learners for embracing the challenge! 👏

We are delighted to announce that 13 of our pupils have been selected to have their poetry published in the Young Writers Monster Poetry anthology! 🎉
The competition challenged children to create their own imaginary monsters and bring them to life through imaginative poetry, inspiring creativity and a love of writing.
We are incredibly proud of all of our talented young writers for this fantastic achievement and cannot wait to see their work in print!

⛏️ Last week, Year 5 had a fantastic couple of days at Apedale Heritage Centre as part of their Geography topic, Natural Resources.
The children took part in a fascinating guided tour of the mine, where they discovered how coal was formed and learned about the important role mining played in shaping the local area. They also explored the museum’s varied exhibits, uncovering the rich industrial and social history of Staffordshire.
From the Romans and Victorians to the stories of ordinary people who lived and worked locally, the visit brought history to life and helped the children develop a deeper understanding of the region’s mining heritage. They even learned about Staffordshire’s last working mine and the impact the industry had on communities across the county.
A wonderful day of learning, exploration and discovery for all involved! 🌍⚒️

🎤 St Mary's Speech Fest 2026 🎤
What an incredible day of speaking, listening and inspiring others!
Today, our annual Speech Fest final took place at Staffordshire Libraries, showcasing the outstanding oracy skills of our pupils. After an impressive 180 children auditioned, just 14 finalists earned the opportunity to take to the stage and share speeches on topics close to their hearts.
We were delighted to welcome an esteemed judging panel:
⭐️ Adam Jogee for Newcastle-under-Lyme MP
⭐️ Mr Murray, Headteacher of St John Fisher Catholic College
⭐️ Justine Lomas, St Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Multi-Academy Trust School Transformation Partner
⭐️ Sue Griggs, Voice 21 School Relationship Lead
Our finalists spoke with confidence, conviction and enthusiasm, making the judges' task exceptionally difficult. Each speech reflected the hard work, courage and passion of the children involved.
A huge congratulations to our Speech Fest winners:
🥉 Raiha – Swimming 🏊♀️
🥈 Trishelle – The Life of an Immigrant 🌍
🥇 Leon – Reading and Writing 📚
We would also like to thank Darius and Lilly, two former St Mary's pupils, who did a fantastic job as our compères and helped the event run so smoothly. 🎤 Thank you to St John Fisher Catholic College and Newcastle-under-Lyme School for allowing them both to attend.
A special thank you goes to Staffordshire Libraries for hosting us and providing such a wonderful setting for the occasion. 📚
Speech Fest was a fantastic celebration of pupil voice and a reminder of the importance of giving every child the confidence and opportunity to express their ideas. We are incredibly proud of every finalist who stepped onto the stage today and shared their voice with such courage and skill.

We have started a brand new St Mary’s Computing Club today, starting with Year 5. The children have been developing their digital literacy, web-based navigation skills and coding skills through a variety of websites. The excitement and camaraderie in the room was palpable! It looks like a fun half-term term ahead!

A huge thank you to all of our Year 5 parents who joined us in school to take part in our Maths lesson yesterday and today!
Parents were invited into the classroom to watch and experience how we teach Maths using Power Maths, with the learning focused on the area of rectangles. It was wonderful to see so many parents engaging in the lesson, working alongside the children and taking part in the activities.
We really value these opportunities to share learning with our families and appreciate everyone who came along to support the children’s Maths journey!
Here are just some of the lovely comments from the parents:
“The Maths lesson was really wonderful. Hats off to the teachers.”
“Enjoyable lesson. I would have happily stayed all day. Enjoyed the interactivity.”
“It was lovely to see and understand how the children learn and how the classes are structured and led. I will happily take this information home to continue the home learning.”
“Really great way to learn. Even I learnt a thing or two. Understanding the problem and finding solutions and not just focusing on the numbers.”
“It was really good to know how my child is learning Maths in school. I would love to attend more workshops.”
“It was very helpful being in the Maths class which gives light to parents about how the children spend time in class.”
